4 Things You Need to Know About Glaucoma

Glaucoma refers a group of diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve of the eye, often leading to vision loss and eventual blindness. Glaucoma may also develop following a severe eye infection, or inflammatory conditions of the eye. The most common symptoms of this condition are pressure or pain in the eye as well as blurred vision.

Here are 4 Things You Need to Know About Glaucoma:

  • If not treated properly, glaucoma may lead to blindness. Although glaucoma is a chronic condition, it can be managed with effective care overseen by a doctor. Treatments for the condition may include eye drops and laser surgery. Several tests are conducted to diagnose glaucoma and if the condition is detected early, doctors can slow or stop its progression.
  • Glaucoma cannot be cured. While glaucoma can be managed, there is currently no cure for the condition and vision cannot be regained once it is lost. While medication and surgery may halt the progression of vision loss, it will not permanently stop it. It may be possible to prevent glaucoma from developing in the first place through regular screenings and eye examinations, although there are no guarantees of preventing it.
  • Anyone can develop glaucoma. Anyone can develop glaucoma, although it usually occurs in patients over the age of 60. People of African and Asian descent are considered more at-risk for glaucoma, as are those with diabetes or a family history of the condition.
  • Patients with glaucoma may not experience any symptoms of the condition. Patients with open-angle glaucoma, the most common form of this condition, typically do not experience any symptoms. Because visual loss typically begins with side vision, many people don’t even realize anything is wrong until significant vision loss has occurred.

Patients should undergo a comprehensive eye examination at least once every two years, especially if they are at greater risk for developing glaucoma due to their current age, health condition, or family history.
